Ngo DInh Diem
Ngo Dinh Diem was born on January 3,1901. In 1955 he declared himself the leader of non-communist South Vietnam during the Vietnam War. He had the support from the french and the U.S. Once alies, Diem constantly rejected U.S. advice and made decisions that upset the South Vietnamese people. Several attempts were made to overthrow Diem but although the Americans were unhappy with his performance as president, they felt they had no choice but to support him. Eventually in 1963 his own people overthrew Diem and they brutally tortured and killed him.
Ho Chi Minh
Ho Chi Minh was the founder of the Vietnamese Communist Party. He led the movement for Vietnamese independence and served as the president of the Democratic Republic of Vietnam from 1945 to 1969. He also tried to fight for Vietnam as one country under communist control.

Ho and his two older siblings were raised by their father after the death of their mother when Ho was ten years old. John F. Kennedy
John Fitzgerald Kennedy sometimes just called JFK became one of the U.S. youngest and best presidents. He helped the nation through the early 1960's, handling the conflicts with Vietnam the way the American people supported and worked to improve lives of American's every day. By 1963 he had sent 1,600 advisers to Vietnam and gave financial and military aid to South Vietnam before he was assassinated on November 22,1963, in Dallas Texas.

Lyndon b. Johnson
The 36th U.S. president, who promised to honor his previous president John F. Kennedy’s limited U.S. commitments in Vietnam but ended up escalating the war after the U.S. Congress passed the Gulf of Tonkin Resolution in 1964. Johnson authorized Operation Rolling Thunder in 1965 to bomb North Vietnam. When this failed, he sent more than 500,000 U.S. troops to Vietnam and converted the conflict into a bitter war.

Henry Kissinger
Henry Kissinger was sworn in on September 22, 1973, as the 56th Secretary of State and he held his position until January 20,1977. Kissinger was the main negotiator of the peace treaty with the North Vietnamese and was secretary of state during Nixon's presidency in the 1970s.

A communist-led army and guerrilla force in South Vietnam that fought its government and was supported by North Vietnam. They were mostly farmers by day and Viet Cong fighters by night.
